10 Things you Don’t Know about Tongue Tie
The medical term for tongue tie is”ankyloglossia” which literally means “anchored tongue.”
1.  Tongue ties affect much more than breastfeeding.  Tongue ties can also affect jaw growth, proper positioning of teeth, and speech.

2.  Where the frenulum attaches at the floor of the mouth can have as much or more impact than where it attaches to the tongue.

3.  The frenulum does not stretch.

4.  No one “grows out of” ankyloglossia.

5.  The procedure to revise the frenulum so the tongue can move properly is called a frenectomy.

6.  The frenectomy can be done in a few minutes with a soft tissue laser with very little discomfort.

7.  It is never too late for a frenectomy.

8.  The frenulum is NOT part of the tongue– the tongue will not be clipped during a frenectomy.

9.  An anterior tongue tie refers to attachment near the tip of the tongue.  Posterior tongue tie refers to attachment at the base of the tongue.

10. There are no documented reports of any complications from a frenectomy.
